In the Nook…
I found this poem and wanted to post it for others to read. My pastor brought up in his sermon this past week about when prayer was no longer accepted in public schools. You can go through wikipedia to find out the details if you’re interested, it’s here: Wikipedia: How prayer became a lesser influence in school. You know, I don’t at all support what Ms. O’Hair believed and what she did, but it took more than her to stop what happened to prayer and Bible Study in schools…there was a vote of 8-1 for the decision to remove Mandatory prayer in public schools. I, personally, haven’t fought to have it placed in schools again. Well, of course I do contact my state representatives and put up a good argument like tons of other people have…but has ANY ONE of you out there done more than that…??? I just wonder about it…I’d love to hear from you without leaving any rude or nasty comments.
I was also reminded today of another place I’d like to share with you. This is HSB’s songwriters blog on blogspot.com. It’s Generation Jesus and Danya is blogging about her life and lately all the trials she’s been facing, so go give her some of your support because you care enough to. If you don’t know who she is then I’ll tell you…she is Rebecca Powell’s daughter, one of them anyway. Rebecca Powell writes books for teen and young mothers. Wise Up is a book that my daughter, funkyleo, won and we love it!!! You know it’s really tough being a teen today, with all that is tempting teens and with family lives shattered and torn to bits and pieces. I know what I’m talking about. I’m a mother of two beautiful daughters who were raised in hard circumstances…not just hard but abusive situations! I thank God every day, almost every minute of each day for giving me the conscience to know that I could make a better life for my daughters without staying in the abuse and without being bitter and angry and imposing those feelings on them! Thank God for all the parents who have spent their lives and their children’s lives homeschooling them, so at least they don’t have the societal pressure that public schooled teens go through. I know there’s still pressure and life’s really tough, but imagine for a few minutes being in a family with NO inclination of faith or God-fearing parents, imagine for those moments never knowing what it’s like having someone say, “Great job”, “thanks for trying” or “let’s keep working on this together”.
This is sad, but it’s a reality in almost every public schooled teens life! Here is the poem I found:
THE NEW SCHOOL PRAYER
This was written by a teen in Baghdad, Arizona.
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That’s no offense; it’s a freedom scene.
The law is specific,the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all. In silence alone we must meditate,
God’s name is prohibited by the state. We’re allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They’ve outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable. We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the ‘unwed daddy,’ our Senior King.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles. It’s “inappropriate” to teach right from wrong,
We’re taught that such “judgments” do not belong.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd. It’s scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns, the school’s a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot, My soul please take!
